“THE VIEW FROM HERE”
OCTOBER 12 - NOVEMBER 16, 2013
CLOSING RECEPTION: Saturday November 16th, 1-4pm
Prohibition Gallery is pleased to present "The View From Here" a solo show of a new body of work by Los Angeles-based artist Jeff Kies.
Kies’ early Neo-Symbolist work makes one think of an L.A. Paul Klee. He described this early work as a sort of “petroglyphic graffiti.” Over the years, his work has evolved as he has experimented with materials such as sandpaper, foil, glass, and found elements. This particular exhibition encompasses a new series of work that is purely abstract. He’s been working on a large scale, using a pre-Roman era style called “verre eglomise” or reverse glass painting. The effect is strikingly complex, making one think of a beloved landscape through the veil of one’s dreams. This body of work is a personal vision, dense with color, and detailed with an elusive magic that transports the viewer.
Jeff Kies is the quintessential Los Angeles artist. Born in Ohio, he studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design, came to L.A. in his early twenties and has been making art and showing it locally ever since. His work can be found in numerous private collections throughout the United States.
