Opening Reception: Saturday, January 11 // 6-9pm

Prohibition Gallery is pleased to announce this exhibition of an all new body of work by ascending Angeleno artist Michael Gittes.

Often rendering his subjects with a paint-filled syringe while focusing on aspects of Western history and culture, this exhibition is a personal study of select ageless styles in art history - with that modern twist that Gittes is best known for. This new series pays homage to five legendary masters of painting - Jackson Pollock, Jacques-Louis David, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Henri Matisse, and René Magritte - those who have had the greatest influence on the artist throughout his life and emerging career.

Painted in Gittes’ playfully abstract style, five large-scale, monochromatic portraits of these great masters are on display, in juxtaposition with the remaining works which serve as a visual explanation of how the artist has incorporated allegiances from each of these late, great maestros into his own work.

Following a successful year including the induction of his works into several notable private collections associated with MOCA, LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and his own solo show at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, Prohibition Gallery is pleased to welcome back this most exceptional talent.

This exhibition is on view through January 25 and by private appointment. For further information or for press enquiries, please contact Shanoa Garcia at shanoa@prohibitiongallery.com or at +1.310.633.1737.
